The Best Restaurants in Oaxaca

 In destinations

Oaxaca is the undisputed culinary capital of Mexico. Known for its complex mole sauces, tamales, and more, it’s a great place to indulge your appetite. While it’s very easy (and inexpensive) to just grab some street tacos, it’s also nice to sit down to a proper meal. Below is a round-up of some of our favorite restaurants in the city. This list is certainly not exhaustive, but we don’t think you can go wrong with any of the following.

(Opening hours often change with little notice, so it’s a good idea to check before you go)

Restaurant Bar El Tipico

Zarate 100 (1 block from el Llano) $

+52 55 5518 0787

This is always one of our first stops when we visit Oaxaca. Serving traditional Oaxacan dishes in a family-like atmosphere you can get all the standard local meals prepared with care. Their breakfasts are particularly exceptional, with excellent chilaquiles and enfrijoladas.

Praga

Allende 106 $$

Located less than a block from Santo Domingo, this classy jazz bar seems to constantly have live musicians. We have to admit that we’ve never had the food here (except for an excellent dessert crepe) but this is a great place to have a beer or a mezcal cocktail and listen to live jazz. Note: although the views from the rooftop terrace are stellar you’re more likely to hear the house music from the club across the street than the performers downstairs.

Mezquite

With creative meals using traditional ingredients and an extensive drinks menu, this is a fun restaurant to go for both the food and the amazing views from the upstairs terrace. It feels upscale without being overly expensive.

Sabor Antiguo

Calle Manuel Doblado 724-A $

Popular with locals, this unassuming restaurant offers a great selection of Oaxacan staples in ample portions. Their comida corrida is a great way to have a hearty and inexpensive lunch.

Molino

Yagul No. 106 $$$

52 951 514 2907

Located just south of the city center, this steakhouse is a true hidden gem. The dining area is tucked away in a pleasant courtyard where diners can order some of the finest steaks in the city. Salads, pasta, and fish offerings are also available and there is pizza on the weekends. If you are going to have just one fancy dinner while in Oaxaca, have it here.

El Quinqué

212 Hidalgo $-$$

Seriously some of the best and most creative burgers in Mexico. Don’t worry vegetarians, they offer some great salads as well.

La Olla

Calle Reforma 402 $$-$$$

A popular tourist spot with a creative seasonal menu as well as some old standards. This restaurant offers a great variety of interesting salads, moles, tostadas, and desserts. Their dessert tamales are simply outstanding.

Tastavins

Calle Murguia 309 $$

This small, intimate tapas bar is a great evening hangout. Open until midnight they offer some great Spanish tapas, pasta and a huge selection of wine, artisanal beer, and mezcal.

El Paseo

Avenida Juárez 605 $$

Somehow we keep finding our way back here. Maybe it’s the excellent steaks, creative drinks, or popularity with locals. Technically a cantina, but in no way a dive.

Boulenc

Calle Porfirio Díaz 207 $

+52 951 351 3648

More than just a bakery and cafe, you can find some excellent salads and sandwiches, with many vegetarian and gluten-free options. Make sure you try some of the fresh baked pastries and breads.
